OVERVIEW

This project involved the extension to and refurbishment of an existing private girls’ junior school in Bromley, Kent.

The project delivered new Reception classrooms, a new visitor main entrance, new specialist teaching rooms, a multi-use hall and drama studio and refurbished offices and meeting rooms.

The main single storey extension to the rear of the existing building adds new inspiring teaching and learning spaces that take advantage of the views out over playing fields beyond. The new visitor entrance to the remodelled front of the existing building contains a green wall that helps to blend the building into the landscape and provides a fully accessible and welcoming entrance for pupils, staff and visitors.

SOLUTION

The refurbishment and remodelling elements of the project required alterations to the existing structure.  This required detailed investigations on site, out of school hours to mimimise disruption to the school, in order to determine the form of the existing construction.  This then informed the structural design required for the alterations.  Some of the work involved the removal of loadbearing walls that required new structure to be installed, located seamlessly into a new uncluttered layout for the new Reception Year classroom.  The rear extension was designed using structural steelwork, creating large spans and helping to meet the architectural vision of delivering exceptional new learning spaces.Image supplied with thanks by IID Architects.
